An air permeability tester measures how easily air passes through a fabric. It sounds
simple, yet this one number decides whether an airbag inflates correctly, a filter
traps dust, or a sportswear fabric feels cool on the skin.

In this guide we start from the very basics. You will learn what air permeability
means, why technical textile makers care about it, how it is tested, and what to
look for in a tester. Then we look closely at the FX 3300 LabAir IV from [Textest Instruments](https://www.textest.ch/),
available in India through Flexitest.

## What is air permeability?

Air permeability is the rate at which air flows through a material when there is
a small difference in air pressure between its two sides.

Think of blowing through a handkerchief and then through a raincoat. Air rushes
through the handkerchief but hardly moves through the raincoat. The handkerchief
has high air permeability; the raincoat has low air permeability.

A fabric is made of yarns and fibres with tiny gaps between them. The size, number
and shape of these gaps decide how much air gets through. Things that change the
gaps include:

 * **Weave or knit structure:** a tight plain weave lets less air through than an
   open knit.
 * **Yarn and fibre type:** fine, tightly twisted yarns pack closer together.
 * **Fabric thickness and density (GSM):** heavier, denser fabrics usually block
   more air.
 * **Finishes and coatings:** calendering, lamination or coatings can close the
   gaps almost completely.

Because our eyes cannot measure these tiny gaps, laboratories use an air permeability
tester to put an exact number on them.

## Why air permeability matters in technical textiles

Technical textiles are fabrics made for performance rather than looks. In these
products, air permeability is often a safety or quality requirement, not a nice-
to-have. Here is where it shows up:

 | Application | Why air permeability matters |
  | Automotive airbags | The fabric must hold gas long enough to cushion the passenger, then release it in a controlled way. |
 | Filtration media (air, dust, HVAC) | Air must pass freely while particles are trapped. Too low means high energy use; too high means poor filtering. |
 | Nonwovens (medical, hygiene, geotextiles) | Breathability of masks, gowns and diapers depends on it. |
 | Sportswear and protective clothing | Controls breathability and comfort, or wind resistance in outerwear. |
 | Parachutes and sailcloth | Decides how the canopy or sail fills and holds its shape. |
 | Paper and packaging | Porosity affects printing, filtering and packaging performance. |
 | Foams (seating, bedding) | Air flow affects comfort and heat build-up. |

For manufacturers, testing air permeability helps to:

 * Check incoming raw material against the supplier's specification.
 * Keep production consistent from batch to batch.
 * Meet buyer and export requirements that quote ASTM, ISO or JIS standards.
 * Develop new products, such as a lighter fabric with the same wind resistance.

India's technical textile sector is growing fast, and export buyers increasingly
ask for test reports to international standards. A reliable in-house tester saves
time and outside lab fees.

## How is air permeability tested?

Every air permeability tester follows the same basic idea: hold the fabric firmly,
pull air through it at a fixed pressure difference, and measure how much air flows.

 1. **Clamp the sample.** A piece of fabric is clamped over a round opening of known
area, called the test surface (for example 20 cm²).
 2. **Create a pressure difference.** A vacuum pump draws air through the fabric until
the pressure drop across it reaches the value the standard asks for. For many fabric
standards this is 100 Pa or 125 Pa.
 3. **Measure the air flow.** The instrument measures the volume of air passing through
    each second.
 4. **Calculate the result.** Air flow is divided by the test area, giving air permeability
    as a velocity.

In simple terms: **air permeability = volume of air flowing per second ÷ test area**.

Testing several spots on the same fabric and averaging them gives a more reliable
result, because fabrics are rarely perfectly even.

## Common units, and how they convert

Different countries and industries use different units, which often confuses new
users. The good news is that they all describe the same thing.

 | Unit | Where it is common | 1 mm/s equals |
  | mm/s | ISO and European standards | 1 |
 | l/m²/s | Same as mm/s, used interchangeably | 1 |
 | cm³/cm²/s | ASTM D737, older lab reports | 0.1 |
 | ft³/ft²/min (CFM) | US buyers, airbag and filter industry | 0.197 |
 | l/dm²/min | Some European and paper standards | 0.6 |
 | m³/m²/min | Filtration and industrial fabrics | 0.06 |
 | m³/m²/h | HVAC and building materials | 3.6 |

A good tester displays the result in whichever unit your customer asks for, so no
manual conversion is needed.

## Meet the FX 3300 LabAir IV air permeability tester

The [FX 3300 LabAir IV](https://flexitest.in/technical-textiles/air-permeability-technical-textile/fx3300-lab-air-permeability-tester-textile/)
is the fourth generation of Textest's well-known [FX 3300 series](https://www.textest.ch/en/products/fx-3300-labair-iv).
It brings 50 years of experience and R&D into one instrument for measuring both
air permeability and pressure drop. It stands out for being easy to use, flexible,
and able to handle a very wide measuring range, from dense coated fabrics to open
nonwovens.

### Key features in plain language

 * **Sophisticated design:** a compact test head and touchscreen unit mounted on
a mobile trolley, so it fits neatly into a QC lab.
 * **More than air permeability:** it also measures pressure drop, useful for filter
   media and other flow-resistance testing.
 * **Sequence Module:** lets operators run a series of tests in a set order, which
   speeds up routine QC.
 * **Automatic cleaning function:** uses compressed air to keep the instrument clean.
Compressed air is optional; the tester works without it.
 * **Automatic measuring range selection:** the instrument picks the right range
by itself, so the operator does not need to guess the fabric's permeability in
   advance.
 * **Evaluation and printing options:** results can be evaluated on the instrument
and printed for reports and customer certificates.

### Technical specifications

 | Parameter | FX 3300 LabAir IV |
  | Measuring range (air permeability) | 0.4 to 750 cm³/cm²/s at 5 cm²; 1 to 10,000 mm/s (l/m²/s) at 20 cm² |
 | Units | mm/s, l/m²/s, l/dm²/min, ft³/ft²/min, cm³/cm²/s, m³/m²/min, m³/m²/h |
 | Measurement accuracy | Better than ±3% of displayed value |
 | Test pressure | 20 to 2,500 Pa (can be increased to 5,000 Pa) |
 | Test surfaces | 5, 20, 25, 38 and 100 cm² (others on request) |

### What these numbers mean for you

 * **Wide range:** from 1 to 10,000 mm/s covers almost everything from airbag fabric
to highly open nonwovens on one machine.
 * **Five test areas:** choose a small head for narrow samples or a large 100 cm
² head for uneven fabrics like nonwovens, where a bigger area gives a more representative
   result.
 * **Flexible pressure:** 20 to 2,500 Pa (up to 5,000 Pa) means you can follow different
   standards without changing instruments.
 * **±3% accuracy:** consistent results that hold up in buyer audits and supplier
   disputes.

## Test standards the LabAir IV complies with

A test standard is an agreed recipe for doing a test, so results from different
labs can be compared. The FX 3300 LabAir IV complies with the standards below and
many other national and international methods.

 | Standard | Region / body | Typical material |
  | ASTM D737 | USA | Textile fabrics |
 | ASTM D3574 | USA | Flexible foams |
 | DIN 53887 | Germany | Textile fabrics |
 | EN ISO 9237 | International / Europe | Textile fabrics |
 | EN ISO 7231 | International / Europe | Flexible cellular polymers (foams) |
 | GB/T 5453 | China | Textile fabrics |
 | GB/T 24218.15 | China | Nonwovens |
 | JIS L 1096-A | Japan | Woven and knitted fabrics |
 | TAPPI T-251 | Paper industry | Porous paper and fabrics |
 | WSP 70.1 | Nonwovens industry (EDANA / INDA) | Nonwovens |

If you export to the US, buyers will usually quote [ASTM D737](https://www.astm.org/d0737-18.html).
European buyers typically ask for [ISO 9237](https://www.iso.org/standard/16869.html).
Having one instrument that covers both saves you from maintaining two setups.

## How to choose an air permeability tester: a quick checklist

Before buying any air permeability tester, check these points against your needs:

 * Does it cover the standards your buyers ask for?
 * Is the measuring range wide enough for all your fabrics, from dense to open?
 * Does it offer several test areas for different sample sizes?
 * Can it display results in the units your customers use?
 * Is it easy for operators to use, ideally with automatic range selection?

## What is a Coefficient of Friction Tester?

A coefficient of friction (COF) tester is a lab instrument used to measure the static
and kinetic friction between two surfaces - commonly a plastic film, sheet, foil,
paper, or fabric sliding against itself, another material, or a standardized sled.
The result, expressed as a numerical coefficient, indicates how easily one surface
slides over another.

Some instruments, like the Labthink C620H, go a step further and combine COF testing
with peel strength testing, allowing labs to evaluate adhesive laminates, medical
bandages, release liners, and protective films on the same machine.

## Why is Coefficient of Friction Testing Important?

Friction directly affects how a material behaves during manufacturing, packaging,
handling, and end use. Getting it wrong can be costly:

 * Too much friction: causes jamming, tearing, or misfeeds on bag-making and packaging
   machines
 * Too little friction: leads to slippage, poor stacking stability, and product
   damage during transport
 * Inconsistent friction: results in unpredictable machine speeds and increased
   downtime
 * Quality assurance: ensures every batch of film, foil, or laminate performs consistently
   on the production line

By quantifying friction with a COF tester, manufacturers can fine-tune slip additives,
coatings, and surface treatments to hit the exact friction performance their equipment
and application demand.

## Test Standards for Coefficient of Friction

COF testing is governed by several recognized international and national standards,
ensuring results are consistent, repeatable, and comparable across labs and suppliers:

 * ISO 8295 - Plastics: Film and sheeting - Determination of coefficients of friction
 * ASTM D1894 - Standard Test Method for Static and Kinetic Coefficients of Friction
   of Plastic Film and Sheeting
 * TAPPI T816 - Coefficient of friction (kinetic) of paper and paperboard
 * GB 10006 - Chinese national standard for coefficient of friction of plastic film
   and sheet
 * ISO 8510-2 / ASTM D4917 / ASTM D3330 / TAPPI T549 / GB/T 2790, 2791, 2792 - additional
peel and friction-related standards (relevant for dual-mode testers like the
   C620H)

Testing to these standards ensures your data is accepted by customers, auditors,
and regulatory bodies worldwide.

## Importance of COF Testing in the Packaging Industry

The packaging industry relies on precise friction control more than almost any other
sector, because packaging films and laminates move constantly through high-speed
automated equipment:

 * Form-Fill-Seal (FFS) machines: require consistent film-to-film and film-to-metal
friction for smooth feeding and sealing
 * Bag-making and pouch-making lines: friction levels affect stacking, opening,
   and machine runnability
 * Palletizing and stacking: correct friction prevents cartons, sacks, and woven
bags from sliding during storage and transport
 * Laminates and adhesives: peel strength testing ensures medical bandages, protective
films, and multi-layer laminates bond and release as intended
 * Cold chain and export packaging: friction and adhesion must remain stable across
temperature ranges during shipping and storage

For flexible packaging converters, film manufacturers, and laminate producers, COF
and peel testing are not optional quality checks - they are essential to avoiding
line stoppages, customer complaints, and product recalls.

[Start your enquiry ](https://flexitest.in/weathering-chamber-rfq-checklist/#weathering-enquiry-panel)

01 / Start with the application

## Describe the part and the decision.

What are you testing, where is it used, and what change matters to your customer?

Name the material or coating and the component it belongs to. State whether it faces
outdoor exposure or receives light through vehicle glazing. Then describe the property
you want to assess.

Example objective

### Interior trim

Compare colour change in a dashboard covering under the customer's specified exposure.

Example objective

### Exterior coating

Check gloss retention and visible surface damage after the agreed test cycle.

Still deciding between exposure methods? Read our [automotive guide to xenon and UV weathering](https://flexitest.in/xenon-vs-uv-weathering-automotive-test-brief/).

02 / Bring the complete requirement

## Include the standard, edition and cycle.

A standard number helps identify the test. Its edition, selected cycle and the customer's
material specification determine the details the chamber must deliver.

Common references you may see in a test requirement| Exposure | Examples |
 | Xenon arc | ASTM G155 for apparatus operation; ISO 4892-2 for plastics; ISO 16474-2 for paints and varnishes. SAE J2412 addresses automotive interior trim and SAE J2527 exterior materials. |
 | Fluorescent UV | ASTM G154 for apparatus operation; ISO 4892-3 for plastics; ASTM D4587 for paints and related coatings. |

**Include the customer's additional requirements.** Record any specified lamp, filter,
cycle variation, reference material or equipment qualification. Ask the supplier
to identify the required options and any differences from your method in the quotation.

03 / Plan the complete batch

## Give the sample size and the total quantity.

Capacity depends on what fits in the holders. A flat test panel and a shaped automotive
component can need very different loading arrangements.

**Dimensions**Length × width × thickness in mm, plus a drawing or photo for shaped
parts.

**Quantity**Every test specimen, including replicates and control specimens.

**Mounting**Exposed surface, backing, fixtures and any area that must remain uncovered.

**Workload**Expected batches, exposure duration and the amount of work planned for
the chamber.

**Count every specimen, including repeats.** Ask for the usable capacity with your
holder and sensor arrangement, and allow for any controls required by the method.

 04 / Specify the light

## Keep the lamp, filter and irradiance together.

For xenon testing, identify the required optical filter or glazing condition. For
fluorescent UV, name the lamp type specified by the method. Record the irradiance
setting exactly, including its unit and measurement wavelength or band.

At a control wavelength

### W/m²/nm

Give the value and the wavelength in nm, such as the specified setting at 340 nm.

Across a wavelength band

### W/m²

Give the value and both ends of the band, such as 300–400 nm.

These are different measurement bases. A bare number or lamp wattage cannot describe
the required irradiance. The control wavelength also does not describe the lamp's
full spectrum.

 05 / Describe each stage

## Separate temperature, humidity and wet stages.

Write down the settings for each light and dark stage. This lets the supplier check
whether the complete combination can be achieved.

Details to copy from your required cycle| Setting | What to include |
 | Black-panel or black-standard temperature | Specify BPT or BST as required by the method, with its temperature in °C. |
 | Chamber air | A separate air-temperature setting if the method specifies one. |
 | Humidity and moisture | Required relative humidity, water spray or condensation stages, and their timing. |
 | Stage sequence | Light/dark sequence, stage durations and any cooling or special exposure conditions. |

BPT, BST and chamber-air temperature describe different measurements. Keep the sensor
name with its value when you share the requirement.

06 / Define the result you need

## Agree when to stop and what to measure.

State the exposure endpoint: a specified number of hours or a radiant-exposure target
with its units and wavelength basis. Add any inspection intervals.

Then identify how the material will be evaluated—for example, colour change, gloss
retention, cracking or a relevant mechanical property—and the customer's acceptance
limit. Record the starting condition so the change can be assessed.

**Plan the evaluation equipment too.** The weathering chamber creates the exposure.
Colour, gloss or mechanical measurements may need separate instruments or laboratory
services, which should be included in your project plan.

 07 / Check the laboratory

## Make room for the complete installation.

Share the installation city and site constraints. Ask for the installation drawing
and utility schedule for the actual configuration being quoted.

**Access and space**Doorways, lifts, floor space, service clearance and the route
into the laboratory.

**Electrical supply**Voltage, phase, frequency, total connected load and the required
dedicated supply.

**Water and drainage**Required water quality and flow, purification equipment, supply
connections and drainage.

**Room conditions**Ambient temperature, ventilation, heat rejection and any separate
cooling or compressed-air needs.

The quotation should identify which utility equipment is included and which must
be arranged at your site.

08 / Compare the written scope

## Check what the price actually includes.

Use the same list when reviewing quotations. A clear inclusion or exclusion makes
an equipment offer easier to assess.

Ask each quotation to confirm these items| Item | Confirmation to request |
 | Chamber and options | Exact model, lamp, filters, control channels, holders and usable specimen capacity. |
 | Method requirements | Required options, calibration documents, customer-required qualification evidence and any deviations. |
 | Installation and handover | Utility equipment, commissioning, operator training and responsibilities at your site. |
 | Ongoing support | Maintenance needs, consumables, spare lamps and filters, service support and warranty terms. |
 | Commercial scope | Delivery timing, freight, taxes, payment terms and exclusions. |

01 / The basics

## A car lives outdoors.⏎ Its materials need to cope.

Automotive weathering testing studies how materials change under controlled exposure
to light, heat and moisture.

Think of a car parked outside every day. Its paint, plastic trims and interior surfaces
receive sunlight and heat. Rain and moisture add another challenge for the parts
on the outside.

Colours may fade, coatings may lose their shine, and some plastics may develop cracks.
An accelerated weathering chamber helps a laboratory compare these changes using
a planned exposure cycle.

**Light**Colour and surface changes

**Heat**Controlled temperature exposure

**Moisture**Wet stages when the cycle calls for them

**Picture this:** a component supplier has two plastic formulations for an exterior
trim. Exposing both to the same agreed conditions helps the team compare colour
change and surface damage before choosing a material.

 02 / Choose the exposure

## Xenon vs UV:⏎ compare the light reaching your sample.

A dashboard fading behind glass and a bumper trim cracking outdoors pose different
questions. To choose the exposure, look at **which wavelengths reach the material**
and **how much light it receives**.

Spectrum & wavelengthThe mix of light in the test. Wavelength is measured in nanometres(**
nm**).

IrradianceThe radiant power reaching a unit area of the sample. Always read the
value **together with its wavelength or band**.

The difference at a glance

UltravioletUVVisible lightColour & appearanceInfraredIR

**Filtered xenon arc**

Broader sunlight spectrum · shaped by the filter

**Fluorescent UV**

UV-focusedDoes not reproduce the full sunlight spectrum

Conceptual coverage, not a measured intensity graph. The lamp and filter determine
the actual spectrum.

UV + visible + infrared

### Xenon arc

For studying material changes under a broader sunlight spectrum.

#### Which wavelengths?

Filtered xenon includes UV, visible light and infrared. A daylight-filtered exposure
can begin near **295 nm** and extend through the visible region into infrared. The
shortest wavelengths reaching the sample depend on the filter.

#### Why the filter matters

Daylight filters represent direct outdoor sunlight. Window-glass filters remove
more short-wave UV to represent light passing through glass. Some automotive methods
specify extended-UV or other particular filters, so use the customer’s required
filter system.

#### Where irradiance is controlled

**340 nm** or **420 nm**, or a band such as **300–400 nm**, depending on the method
and instrument configuration. A 340 nm control point does not mean the lamp emits
only 340 nm light.

**On a vehicle**Compare paint colour and gloss, or fading in dashboard, door-trim
and upholstery materials under the required glazing exposure.

**Relevant references:** ASTM G155, ISO 4892-2, ISO 16474-2, SAE J2412 and SAE J2527.

Choose the UV lamp

### Fluorescent UV

For studying UV-driven deterioration with the specified heat and moisture cycle.

#### UVA-340: a sunlight UV match

UVA-340 lamps closely match the short-wave UV portion of sunlight over approximately**
295–365 nm**. This is the sunlight-matching region; the lamp can emit at other wavelengths
too.

#### UVB-313: shorter wavelengths

UVB-313 lamps concentrate their output around **280–360 nm**, with a peak near **
313 nm**. They include wavelengths below about **295 nm**, the lower limit normally
present in sunlight at ground level. This can accelerate damage but may also produce
failures that outdoor sunlight would not.

#### Where irradiance is controlled

UVA-340 is commonly controlled at **340 nm**. UVB control may be at **310 or 313
nm**, depending on the instrument and method. Check the specified control point;
the lamp name alone is not enough.

**On a vehicle**Compare cracking, chalking or loss of gloss in exterior plastics
and coatings under a specified UV, temperature and wet cycle.

**Relevant references:** ASTM G154, ISO 4892-3 and ASTM D4587.

 Read the setting correctly

### What does an irradiance level actually tell you?

Consider **0.55 W/m²/nm at 340 nm**. This describes spectral irradiance at a specified
UV wavelength. It does not describe the lamp’s electrical wattage or the total light
across its spectrum.

**0.55**The selected level

**W/m²/nm**Power per area, per wavelength interval

**340 nm**The wavelength used for control

#### Examples you may encounter in test methods

Xenon · SAE J2527**0.55 W/m²/nm**at 340 nm

UVA-340 · ASTM G154 Cycle 1**0.89 W/m²/nm**at 340 nm

Xenon · ASTM G155 Cycle 5**1.10 W/m²/nm**at 420 nm

These are method examples, not universal settings or Flexitest chamber operating
limits. Confirm the standard edition, complete cycle and required configuration
before testing.

**A wavelength reading and a band total are different.** A setting in **W/m² over
300–400 nm** totals irradiance across that UV band. It cannot be compared directly
with **W/m²/nm at 340 nm** or **420 nm**. Converting between them requires the spectral
distribution.

**More irradiance does not automatically mean a better test.** Changing intensity
can change the rate of damage; changing the spectrum can change the type of damage.
Keep the specified lamp, filter, irradiance, temperature and moisture cycle together.
Xenon and UV results are not interchangeable.

### Bring the light settings into your chamber shortlist.

For a Flexitest xenon or UV chamber, share the **lamp or filter, irradiance value
and units, control wavelength or band, test cycle and sample size**. We can review
the proposed configuration against your customer’s requirement.

03 / Real automotive applications

## Different parts.⏎ Different durability questions.

Start with where the material is used and the change that would matter to the customer.

![Rain droplets on automotive paint beside the windscreen and interior](https://
flexitest.in/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/automotive-weathering-sunlight-moisture-
20260907.webp "Automotive Weathering Testing: Xenon vs UV Explained 14")

Paint, exterior plastics and cabin materials experience different exposure conditions.

### Paints & coatings

**Where:** body panels, painted components and protective finishes.

**What to check:** colour change, loss of gloss, cracking or changes in surface
appearance.

### Exterior plastics

**Where:** bumper trims, mirror housings and exposed plastic components.

**What to check:** fading, surface deterioration and changes in relevant material
properties.

### Interior materials

**Where:** dashboards, door trims, upholstery and decorative surfaces.

**What to check:** changes in colour and appearance under the specified light and
heat exposure.

Automotive manufacturers, component suppliers, paint and polymer developers, and
quality-control laboratories use these comparisons to inform material decisions.

04 / From sample to decision

## How does the test work?

The chamber creates the exposure. Your agreed evaluations establish the result.

 1. **Prepare the samples.**Use representative pieces of the material, coating or component,
    prepared as the method requires.
 2. **Set the exposure.**Record the lamp or filter, irradiance with its control wavelength
or band, temperature and wet stages from the agreed test cycle.
 3. **Run the cycle.**Expose the samples for the specified duration or exposure endpoint.
 4. **Compare the changes.**Assess colour, gloss, visible damage or other properties
    relevant to the application.

**Does 1,000 hours mean years on the road?** There is no universal conversion. Use
the test to answer a defined question, such as which finish performs better under
the same conditions. Predicting service life needs supporting evidence for the material
and its real environment.

05 / Standards made practical

## Which standard does⏎ your customer need?

The standard helps define the exposure. The material specification and customer
requirement also determine the cycle, evaluation and acceptance limits.

Common automotive weathering references| Standard | What it covers | Exposure |
| ASTM G155 | Operating xenon arc exposure equipment | Xenon arc |
| ISO 4892-2 | Xenon exposure of plastics, including daylight and window-glass-filtered light | Xenon arc |

08 / A little more detail

## Questions from automotive teams

Why test a dashboard or door trim if it stays inside the vehicle?

**Interior materials still receive light and heat through the glazing.** A dashboard
surface, door trim or upholstery material can change in colour or appearance during
use. Testing helps a supplier compare finishes or formulations before selecting
a material for production.

SAE J2412 addresses xenon exposure of automotive interior trim. ISO 4892-2 may also
appear in a plastics specification. The chosen filter and cycle must match the customer’s
requirement; an interior test should not simply copy the conditions used for an
exterior component.

What can weathering testing tell us about exterior automotive parts?

**It helps reveal changes that affect appearance and material durability.** Think
of a black exterior moulding losing its finish, a painted surface losing gloss,
or a plastic surface developing cracks. A controlled exposure lets the team evaluate
candidate materials under a defined set of conditions.

SAE J2527 covers xenon exposure of automotive exterior materials. The customer’s
specification determines the exposure and the checks required afterwards. A weathering
result answers the chosen light, heat and moisture question; separate tests may
still be needed for other service conditions.

Do a plastic trim part and a painted panel use the same testing standard?

**They may use the same type of light source but different material-specific methods.**
ISO 4892-2 and ISO 4892-3 cover plastics exposed to xenon and fluorescent UV respectively.
ISO 16474-2 covers xenon exposure of paints and varnishes; ASTM D4587 covers UV
and condensation exposure of paints and related coatings.

ASTM G155 and ASTM G154 describe how the respective exposure apparatus is operated.
They do not, by themselves, tell you how much fading or cracking your customer will
accept. Ask for the material specification as well as the exposure standard.

What does a useful weathering test result look like?

**It connects a measured change to a practical decision.** For two dashboard finishes,
that might mean comparing colour change after the same agreed exposure. For exterior
paint, it could mean checking gloss retention and visible surface damage. Relevant
mechanical tests may also be needed when strength is part of the requirement.

Record the starting condition, exposure settings and evaluation method so the comparison
is clear. A chamber does not automatically produce a durability pass: the results
must be assessed against the customer’s acceptance criteria.

If a sample survives 1,000 hours, how long will it last on a car?

**There is no fixed hours-to-years answer.** Sunlight, temperature, moisture, location
and the material itself influence outdoor ageing. A laboratory cycle also exposes
the sample in a particular way, so a simple multiplication can give a misleading
lifespan claim.

The useful question is whether the material meets the agreed requirement or performs
better than an alternative in a controlled comparison. Predicting service life requires
evidence linking laboratory exposure with real-world behaviour for that material
and application.

Why might the same material behave differently in xenon and UV tests?

**The same reading at one wavelength can come from two different spectra.** For
example, matching xenon and UVA-340 at 340 nm does not match their total light or
their visible-light exposure. Filtered xenon includes UV, visible and infrared;
ordinary UVA/UVB weathering lamps focus on UV. Temperature and wet stages also influence
the result.

For plastics, ISO 4892-2 and ISO 4892-3 distinguish these two exposure methods.
Use the customer’s specified method and lamp choice when comparing materials. A
more severe-looking result is not automatically a better prediction of vehicle service
life.

Does a weathering test also show whether interior materials will cause windscreen
fogging?

**No—these tests answer different questions.** Weathering examines changes caused
by light, heat and moisture exposure, such as fading or surface deterioration. Fogging
testing examines substances released from heated interior materials that can condense
on a cooler surface.

For a dashboard covering or upholstery material, a development programme may need
both appearance-durability and fogging results. Passing one test does not establish
performance in the other; follow the separate requirements in the customer’s material
specification.

How can an automotive supplier start a first weathering test programme?

**Start with one component and one clear question.** Are you comparing two trim
colours, checking a coating change, or assessing an exterior plastic formulation?
Obtain the customer’s standard, edition and cycle, then agree the sample preparation,
exposure endpoint and measurements needed to make the decision.

Share this brief and your sample sizes with Flexitest. The range includes SX/1000
and SX/6500/H xenon chambers, plus ST/UV/A and SB/UV/A fluorescent UV chambers.

# Dynamic Climate Chamber vs. Drying and Heating Chamber: How to Choose the Right One

Walk into almost any materials testing, quality assurance, or R&D lab, and you'll
find some version of a temperature-controlled chamber humming in the corner.

But "temperature chamber" is a broad category, and two of the most commonly confused
types are the **dynamic climate chamber (DCC)** and the **drying and heating chamber(
DHC)**. They can look similar from the outside - insulated steel boxes with a control
panel - but they're built to do very different jobs.

Choosing the wrong one is an expensive mistake: you either pay for climate-simulation
capability you'll never use, or you under-equip your lab for the compliance and
durability tests your standards actually require.

⚡ The Short Version

🌡 Dynamic Climate Chamber (DCC)

Simulates **changing environmental conditions** - temperature and humidity - to
see how a product behaves in the real world over time.

🔥 Drying & Heating Chamber (DHC)

Applies **stable, controlled heat** to dry, cure, sterilize, or age a sample as
efficiently and evenly as possible.

 01

## What is a Dynamic Climate Chamber (DCC)?

A dynamic climate chamber is purpose-built for **cyclical and complex climate testing**.
It's designed to move quickly and repeatedly between temperature and humidity extremes,
replicating what a product might experience across seasons, altitude changes, or
transport conditions — in a fraction of the real-world time.

Typical Features

 * **Wide temperature range:** commonly -40°C to 180°C, with specialized models
reaching down to -70°C for cold-climate testing
 * **Humidity control:** many models regulate relative humidity across roughly 10%
to 98% RH using precision sensors and vapour humidification
 * **Fast, repeatable cycling:** rapid alternation speeds (often around 5 K/min)
   enable standards-compliant cyclical testing
 * **Programmability:** onboard controllers typically store dozens of programs with
up to 100 process steps each for unattended multi-day profiles
 * **Standards compliance:** designed to meet current IEC, EN, and MIL testing standards

Best Use Cases

A DCC earns its keep in **stress testing, stability testing, and durability testing**
across automotive components, electronics, aerospace parts, coatings, and materials
science — anywhere you need to know how something holds up when climate conditions
swing.

 02

## What is a Drying and Heating Chamber (DHC)?

A drying and heating chamber is the workhorse for **routine thermal processing**:
drying, heating, curing, sterilizing, and material aging. There's no humidity simulation
and no rapid climate cycling — the goal is stable, uniform, energy-efficient heat.

Typical Features

 * **Broad, steady temperature range:** typically 5°C to 300°C — well above what
climate chambers offer, since drying and sterilization tasks call for sustained
   high heat
 * **Natural or forced convection:** natural-convection models suit gentle gradual
drying; forced-convection models use fans for fast homogeneous heat distribution
 * **Temperature uniformity:** quality units maintain tight accuracy and recover
quickly after door openings for repeat-batch work
 * **Efficiency-focused design:** strong thermal insulation and optimized heating
elements keep energy costs low during long continuous cycles
 * **Application versatility:** used across industry, science, and QA including
   processes governed by EN 1539:2015

Best Use Cases

A DHC earns its keep in **routine lab drying, sterilization, curing, tempering**,
and any process where you need dependable, uniform heat rather than simulated environmental
stress.

 03

 05

## How to choose between a DCC and a DHC

Ask yourself one question: **does your test need to change conditions, or just apply
heat?**

### Choose based on your testing need

🌡

Choose a DCC if you need to...

Validate how a product survives temperature swings, humidity exposure, or seasonal
cycling — for compliance testing, product qualification, or R&D stress analysis

🔥

Choose a DHC if you need to...

Dry samples, cure materials, sterilize equipment, or run steady thermal treatments-
a DHC does the job more efficiently and at a lower cost

💡 **Many labs run both side by side:** a DHC for daily sample prep and processing,
and a DCC for the more demanding qualification and stability testing that standards
or customers require.

Beyond the DCC-vs-DHC decision, the right unit also depends on chamber volume, required
ramp rates, load size, refrigerant type, controller and data-logging needs, and
industry-specific standards - details that are hard to generalize in a blog post.

 FAQ

If you work in packaging quality control, you’ve almost certainly come across the
term WVTR.

A packaging film may look perfect, seal properly, and pass visual inspection-yet
still allow enough moisture to reduce product shelf life. WVTR testing helps packaging
engineers quantify how effectively a material resists water vapour under controlled
temperature and humidity conditions.

Whether you’re testing flexible films for food packaging, pharmaceutical blister
packs, or industrial laminates, **Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR)** is one
of the most important parameters you need to measure – and understand.

In this guide, we explain exactly what WVTR testing is, how it works, which test
standards apply, what the numbers mean, and how to choose the right instrument for
your application.

 *  📌 **Quick Summary**
 * WVTR = rate of water vapour passing through a material over time
 *     Key standards: ASTM E96, ASTM F1249, ISO 15106-1 / 15106-2
 * Critical for: food, pharma, flexible laminates, pouch manufacturing

 * Lower WVTR = better moisture barrier = longer shelf life
 * Two main methods: Gravimetric (cup) and IR / Electrolytic Sensor
 * Unit: g/m²/day (grams per square metre per day)

## What does WVTR mean?

WVTR stands for **Water Vapour Transmission Rate**. It measures the amount of water
vapour that passes through a unit area of a material in a given time under specific
conditions of temperature and humidity.

The standard unit for WVTR is **g/m²/day** (grams per square metre per day). A lower
WVTR value means the material is a better moisture barrier.

   | WVTR Value | Barrier Level | Typical Application |
     | < 0.1 g/m²/day | Ultra-high barrier | Pharmaceutical blisters, sterile medical packaging |
  | 0.1 – 1.0 g/m²/day | High barrier | Snack food pouches, meat packaging, retort pouches |
  | 1.0 – 10 g/m²/day | Medium barrier | General flexible packaging, coffee pouches |
  | > 10 g/m²/day | Low barrier | Industrial wrapping films, non-food applications |

**Note:** WVTR values cannot be compared directly unless the test method, temperature,
relative humidity, specimen thickness, and test area are considered.

## Why does WVTR matter for packaging?

Moisture is one of the primary causes of product degradation.

It leads to microbial growth, oxidation, clumping of powders, loss of crispness,
and reduced drug efficacy. Packaging materials are the first line of defence.

 * Getting the WVTR of your packaging material wrong can result in:
 * Shortened shelf life of food or pharmaceutical products
 * Failed regulatory compliance (FSSAI, FDA, EU packaging regulations)
 * Customer complaints and costly product recalls
 * Loss of brand trust and market share

**WVTR testing gives you a quantifiable, reproducible measurement** that lets your
packaging development team choose the right film, verify supplier quality, and demonstrate
compliance to customers and regulators.

## How is WVTR testing done?

There are three principal methods used globally for WVTR measurement:

Method 1 - Gravimetric method (Cup method)

 ASTM E96 / E96M ISO 2528 IS 1060

A test specimen is sealed over a cup containing a desiccant or water. Placed in
a controlled temperature and humidity environment, the cup is periodically weighed.
The change in weight over time gives the WVTR.

✓ Pros

Simple, low cost, no gas sensor needed. Suitable for any material thickness.

✗ Cons

Slow - test cycles of 24 hours to several days. Requires high-precision balance.

Method 2 - Infrared sensor method (Modulated NIR)

 ASTM F1249 ISO 15106-2

The film specimen separates a dry nitrogen stream from a humid air stream. Water
vapour passing through the film is detected by an infrared sensor - fast and accurate
for high-barrier films.

✓ Pros

Fast results (hours), high sensitivity, accurate for <0.1 g/m²/day, automated.

✗ Cons

Higher instrument cost. Requires appropriate calibration and periodic instrument
verification.

Method 3 - Electrolytic sensor (Coulometric) method

 astm F3199 ISO 15106-3

Water vapour permeating through the film is absorbed by a phosphorus pentoxide electrolytic
cell, generating a measurable current. Used for ultra-high-barrier applications.
Can measure WVTR as low as 0.0001 g/m²/day.

✓ Pros

Ultra-high sensitivity. Essential for pharma and flexible electronics.

✗ Cons

Highest instrument cost. Specialist calibration required.

 📡 IR Sensor

## Test conditions - temperature and humidity

WVTR values are strongly influenced by temperature and relative humidity (RH). Always
report your test conditions alongside the WVTR value.

   | Condition | Temperature | Relative Humidity | Typical Use Case |
     | Standard | 23°C | 50% RH | General packaging, Europe / ISO default |
  | Tropical | 38°C | 90% RH | Pharma (ICH Zone IVb), food in tropical climates |
  | Accelerated | 40°C | 75% RH | Pharma (ICH Zone III/IV standard) |

In India, where temperature and humidity vary dramatically – especially in coastal
and tropical regions – testing at 38°C / 90% RH gives the most realistic performance
data for products distributed nationally.

## Which films and materials are tested?

 * WVTR testing applies to virtually any flexible barrier material:
 * Flexible packaging films: BOPP, PET, PE, PA (Nylon), EVOH multilayer laminates
 * Aluminium foil laminates and metalized films
 * Pharmaceutical blister foils and alu-alu laminates
 * Paper and paperboard with barrier coatings
 * Pouches and sachets (food, personal care, industrial)
 * Breathable membranes and technical textiles
 *     Agricultural mulch films

### WVTR vs OTR - what's the difference?

WVTR and OTR are the two most important barrier properties in flexible packaging–
and they are often tested together.

Many food and pharmaceutical products are sensitive to both moisture and oxygen.
For example, a product may require low WVTR to prevent moisture absorption and low
OTR to reduce oxidation. In such applications, evaluating both properties provides
a more complete understanding of packaging barrier performance.

   | Parameter | WVTR | OTR |
     | Full name | Water Vapour Transmission Rate | Oxygen Transmission Rate |
  | What it measures | Moisture passing through film | Oxygen passing through film |
  | Unit | g/m²/day | cc/m²/day (or mL/m²/day) |
  | Key standard | ASTM E96, ASTM F1249, ISO 15106 | ASTM D3985, ISO 15105-2 |
  | Critical for | Biscuits, pharma, hygroscopic powders | Meat, coffee, cheese, chips |
  | Detection method | Gravimetric, IR sensor, Coulometric | Coulometric, IR sensor |

Many packaging labs test both WVTR and OTR together. Multi-parameter combo instruments–
like the **Labthink Combo Tester C406H** – are designed to measure both on one platform.

## FAQ's

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Common questions from QC managers, procurement
officers, and R&D teams.

What is a good WVTR value for food packaging?

It depends on the product. For moisture-sensitive foods like biscuits, chips, or
powders, a WVTR below 1.0 g/m²/day is generally required. For products like fresh
produce that need some breathability, a higher WVTR may be acceptable or even desirable.

What is the difference between WVTR and MVTR?

WVTR (Water Vapour Transmission Rate) and MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate)
refer to the same measurement. MVTR is an older term, still used in some medical
and textile standards. Both measure the rate of water vapour passing through a material
and use the same units (g/m²/day).

How long does a WVTR test take?

Gravimetric (cup) method tests typically take 24 to 72 hours per cycle. Modern infrared
sensor instruments like the Labthink W3/230 can produce results in 2–6 hours for
most packaging films, significantly reducing lab turnaround time.

Can WVTR be tested on pouches and finished packaging?

Standard WVTR tests are performed on flat film specimens. For finished pouches,
the whole-package transmission rate can be determined using a headspace or sealed-
pouch method – a different but related measurement. For most QC and supplier qualification
purposes, flat film testing is standard practice.

Is WVTR testing required for export packaging?

Many export markets – particularly in Europe, the US, and Middle East – require
suppliers to submit WVTR test data as part of material qualification. Pharmaceutical
packaging exported to regulated markets must meet ICH Q1A stability guidelines,
which specify temperature and humidity conditions for packaging material testing.

Need a WVTR tester for your lab?

Flexitest supplies Labthink permeability testing instruments across India  gravimetric,
IR sensor, electrolytic, and combo models.

*     Complete Technical Guide

 1. [Home](https://flexitest.in)

In filtration, membrane manufacturing, and porous material development, understanding
the precise pore structure of a material is critical. **Capillary flow porometry**
is one of the most reliable and widely adopted techniques for measuring **pore size
and pore size distribution** in porous media. From polymeric membranes to ceramic
filters, this technique helps manufacturers validate product quality, optimise performance,
and meet stringent industry specifications.

## 01. What is capillary flow porometry?

Capillary flow porometry is a non-destructive characterisation technique used to
measure the through pores of porous materials. It determines pore size by displacing
a wetting liquid from the pores of a sample using pressurised gas — or another liquid.
This method is uniquely valuable because it measures only through pores — the continuous
channels that connect one side of a material to the other. This makes it the most
relevant technique for filtration media, membranes, and barrier materials where
flow performance matters.

Gas-liquid porometry covers pore sizes from 500 µm down to 13 nm, while liquid-liquid
porometry extends into the nanofiltration range down to 2 nm – making capillary
flow porometry one of the widest-range pore characterisation techniques available.

## 02. How does capillary flow porometry work?

A capillary flow porometer measures the gas pressure required to empty pores of
a given size. At the same time, it records the gas flow rate as a function of applied
pressure. From this data, two curves are generated:

P = (4γ cosθ) / D

P= applied pressure

γ = surface tension of the wetting liquid

θ= contact angle between liquid and pore wall

D= pore diameter

## Key parameters measured

Capillary flow porometry provides several critical parameters used in product validation,
quality control, and R&D:

## **Bubble point pore size**⏎ The largest through pore in the material

## **Mean flow pore size**⏎ Most representative pore size of the material

## **Smallest pore size**⏎ Smallest detectable through pore

## **Cumulative distribution **⏎ Cumulative pore size distribution across the range

## **Differential distribution **⏎ Differential pore size distribution profile

## **Air permeability **⏎ Gas flow rate through the dry sample

### Technique comparison at a glance

## 03. Applications: where capillary flow porometry is used

Capillary flow porometry is used across many industries that rely on porous materials.
Common sample types include:

 * Polymeric membranes — flat sheet and hollow fiber
 * Nonwovens and technical textiles
 * Ceramic membranes and tubes
 * Porous metal discs and metal fiber media
 * Specialty filtration papers
 * Any other filter media containing through pores

### Industries using capillary flow porometry

## 04. Why pore size distribution matters

Two materials with the same average pore size can perform very differently
if their**
pore size distributions** differ.

A narrow distribution indicates a uniform structure and reliable filtration
efficiency.

A wide distribution can mean inconsistent performance, premature failure,
or contamination
breakthrough.

By accurately characterising pore size distribution, capillary flow porometry helps:

 * **R&D teams** — design better materials with tighter structural control
 * **QA/QC teams** — catch defects before products ship
 * **Production teams** — maintain batch-to-batch consistency
 * **End users** — select the right media for the right application

## 05. Advantages of capillary flow porometry

Capillary flow porometry offers several distinct advantages over techniques such
as mercury intrusion porosimetry:

 * Measures only** functional through** pores that contribute to flow performance
 *     **Mercury-free **- no toxic reagents required
 * **Fast, automated, and reproducible **- suited to both R&D and routine QC

 * **Non-destructive **- the same sample can be reused or archived after testing
 * **Wide measurement range **spanning multiple material classes
 * **ISO and ASTM compliant** - results traceable to international standards

## 06. Choosing the right porometer

Modern capillary flow porometers are fully automated and user-friendly. When evaluating
a porometer for your lab, look for:

 * **Wide pressure and flow range **to cover your full material spectrum
 * **High-resolution sensors** for nanoscale accuracy
 * **Real-time software monitoring **with data export capability
 * **Support for both GLP and LLP** porometry modes
 * **Compliance with ASTM and ISO** international testing standards

At Flexitest in partnership with our OEM [Porometer](https://www.porometer.com/),
we supply advanced capillary flow porometers across India with full application
consultation, installation, and ongoing support.

## 07. Conclusion

Capillary flow porometry is an indispensable tool for any organisation
working with
porous materials.

By accurately measuring **bubble point, mean flow pore size, pore size
distribution,
and air permeability
, it enables manufacturers to validate
product quality and
meet the most demanding industry requirements.

Whether you are developing nanofiltration membranes, ensuring consistency
of technical
textiles, or qualifying ceramic filters — capillary flow porometrydelivers the reliable,
repeatable data you need.

What is the difference between capillary flow porometry and mercury porosimetry?
+

Capillary flow porometry measures only through pores using a wetting liquid and
gas, while mercury porosimetry measures all pores by intruding mercury under high
pressure. Porometry is non-destructive and mercury-free.

What is the bubble point in capillary flow porometry? +

The bubble point is the pressure at which gas first flows through the largest pore
of a wetted sample. It corresponds to the largest through pore size in the material
and is the first critical data point generated during a gas-liquid porometry measurement.

Can capillary flow porometry measure nanopores? +

Yes. Gas-liquid porometry can measure pores down to approximately 13 nm, while liquid-
liquid porometry can measure pores as small as 2 nm. The correct liquid pair must
be selected based on your target pore size range.

Which industries use capillary flow porometry? +

Industries include filtration, membrane manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals,
automotive, energy, water treatment, electronics, aerospace, and technical textiles.

Is capillary flow porometry a destructive test? +

No. It is a non-destructive technique — the sample can typically be dried and reused
after testing. This makes it ideal for testing valuable or limited samples in R&
D environments.

## What Is a Universal Testing Machine (UTM)?

A **Universal Testing Machine**, commonly known as a UTM Machine, is an electromechanical
or hydraulic system used to evaluate the mechanical properties of materials under
controlled conditions. The term “**universal**” reflects the machine’s ability to
perform multiple types of mechanical tests –  tensile, compression, flexural, peel,
tear, shear, and more –  on virtually any material, from thin plastic films to reinforced
composites and metals.

“UTM Machines are the backbone of quality control laboratories and R&D departments
across industries – delivering precise, repeatable data to meet international standards
and ensure product safety.”

The **Tinius Olsen ST Series** of electromechanical universal testing systems is
designed to test a wide range of materials –  including plastics, films, paper,
packaging materials, adhesives, foils, medical devices, composites, metals, and
components –  in tension, compression, flexure, shear, peel, and many more test
modes.

The-Complete-Guide-to-Material-Testing-Across-Industries-2.webp "How to Choose the
Right Universal Testing Machine for Your Industry 43")

## Why Is Universal Testing Machine Essential Across Industries?

Every industry works with materials that must perform under stress – and a **Universal
Testing Machine** (UTM Machine) is the one instrument that validates whether they
actually will. In packaging, it checks if a sealed pouch will survive transit without
tearing or a laminated film will hold its bond. In plastics and polymers, it confirms
that an injection-moulded part or extruded pipe has consistent strength from batch
to batch. In automotive, it verifies that chassis steel, seatbelt webbing, and dashboard
plastics can handle the forces they’ll face on the road. In paint and coatings,
it measures whether a coating will peel off, crack under bending, or lose adhesion
over time. In the EV sector, it tests battery separator films, electrode coatings,
and lightweight body panels to ensure passenger safety. In technical textiles, it
validates that high-performance fabrics used in aerospace, defence, and medical
applications can withstand extreme tensile and tear forces. Across all these sectors,
the UTM delivers one thing every manufacturer needs – precise, repeatable, standards-
compliant data that proves a material is safe and fit for purpose before it reaches
the end user.

## How Does a Universal Testing Machine Work?

A UTM works by applying a controlled force to a test specimen and measuring the
material’s response. The core components include:

#### Load Frame

The rigid structure that houses the testing mechanism and provides stability during
high-force tests.

#### Crosshead

The moving part that applies force to the specimen at a precisely controlled speed
and displacement.

#### Load Cell

A high-precision transducer that measures the applied force with accuracy better
than 0.2% of the reading.

#### Grips & Fixtures

Pneumatic, manual, or wedge-action grips that securely hold the specimen without
slippage.

#### Extensometer

Contact or non-contact devices that measure specimen strain and elongation with
exceptional precision.

#### Software

Horizon Materials Testing Software — data acquisition, analysis, and standards-compliant
reporting.

The ST Series from Tinius Olsen features an internal data rate of up to 2,730 samples
per second per channel, self-identifying load cells, built-in pneumatic supply for
grip operation, T-slot columns for flexible accessory mounting, and the powerful
Horizon Materials Testing Software for comprehensive data analysis and multi-machine
control.

## Technical Specifications of a UTM: What You Need to Know

While the versatility of a Universal Testing Machine is its greatest strength, its
performance is defined by its technical parameters. The specifications of a UTM
vary significantly based on the frame type (single-column vs. dual-column) and the
material being tested.
If you are looking to invest in a UTM, these are the five
core specifications you must evaluate:**1. Load Capacity (Force Range)The load capacity
determines the maximum force the machine can exert.Range: Standard UTMs range from
5 kN (500 kgf) for lightweight materials like plastic films and textiles, up to
2000 kN (200 Tonnes) or more for heavy-duty metals and construction materials.Selection
Tip: To ensure high-resolution data and machine longevity, your average test load
should ideally fall between 20% and 80% of the machine’s total capacity.2. Crosshead
Speed RangeStandardized testing (such as ASTM D882 for films or ISO 527 for plastics)
often requires specific strain rates to get accurate results.Typical Spec: Most
modern UTMs offer a variable speed range from 1 mm/min to 1000 mm/min.Why it matters:
Precise speed control ensures consistent loading rates, which is vital for calculating
the Modulus of Elasticity and Yield Strength accurately.3. Measurement AccuracyIn
quality control, the margin for error is slim.Industry Standard: Most high-precision
UTMs provide an accuracy of ±0.5% to ±1% of the applied load.Flexitest Advantage:
Our machines are engineered to provide NABL-traceable accuracy, ensuring your results
are internationally recognized and audit-ready.4. Control & Automation SystemsThe“
brain” of the UTM defines the user experience and data reliability.Manual/Digital:
Suitable for simple pass/fail tests and basic peak-load measurements.Computer-Controlled(
Advanced): This is the modern industry standard. It allows for real-time stress-
strain curve plotting, automatic data logging, and comprehensive report generation
complying with global ISO/ASTM protocols.5. Power Supply & InfrastructureDepending
on the motor type (Servo vs. Induction) and the load capacity, the power requirements
change.Standard Lab Models: Usually operate on a single-phase 220V/50Hz supply.Heavy-
Duty Industrial Models: These often require a three-phase 440V/60Hz connection to
power the high-torque motors or hydraulic pumps required for metal testing.

## Types of Tests Performed on a UTM

TEST 01

#### Tensile Testing

Measures resistance to being pulled apart. Determines tensile strength, yield strength,
elongation, and Young's modulus.

TEST 02

#### Compression Testing

Evaluates behaviour under crushing force. Essential for rigid plastics, packaging
containers, and EV battery enclosures.

TEST 03

#### Flexural Testing

Determines resistance to cracking under bending stress using 3-point or 4-point
methods.

TEST 04

#### Peel & Adhesion

Measures bond strength between laminates, coatings, labels, and sealed packaging
at 90° or 180° angles.

TEST 05

#### Tear Testing

Evaluates force required to propagate a tear through films, textiles, rubber, and
flexible packaging.

TEST 06

#### Shear Testing

Measures resistance to sliding forces. Important for adhesives, fasteners, and composite
interlaminar testing.

## Introduction:

In the flexible packaging and polymer industries, ASTM D882 is the definitive standard
for determining the tensile properties of plastics less than 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) in
thickness. Unlike thicker materials, thin films demand extreme sensitivity and precision.
For QA managers, achieving consistent, repeatable results is often a challenge due
to sample fragility and the high risk of operator error.

## Why ASTM D882 Demands Specialized Equipment:

Standard tensile testers often lack the low-force resolution required for thin films.
ASTM D882 specifically highlights three critical factorsthat define a successful
test:

**1. Precision Force Measurement:** Thin films often fail at very low loads. A tester
must offer ahigh resolution – ideally 0.05% of the full scale – to capture accurate
stress-strain curves.
**2. Speed Consistency:** The standard requires a Constant
Rate of Grip Separation (CRE). Anyfluctuation in motor speed directly skews the
elongation and tensile strength data.**3. Advanced Grip Technology:** “Jaw breaks”
or slippage are the #1 reasons for invalid tests.Specialized pneumatic grips are
required to apply uniform pressure across the samplewidth without creating stress
concentrations.

## The Solution: The C610H Auto Tensile Tester

The [C610H](https://flexitest.in/packaging-testing-equipments/utm-packaging-industry/c610h-auto-tensile-tester/)
isn’t just more accurate; it’sfaster. With an Auto-Returnfeature and pre-set standard
templates, your lab can process 3xmore samples per hour compared to manual mechanical
testers. The software automaticallygenerates professional PDF reports with statistical
analysis (Mean, Standard Deviation, and CV),ready for client submission.

 * **Integrated Testing Intelligence:** The [C610H](https://flexitest.in/packaging-testing-equipments/utm-packaging-industry/c610h-auto-tensile-tester/)
features a built-in computer system thatautomates the entire testing sequence.
This removes the “human variable,” ensuring thatwhether Test A is run by a senior
engineer or a junior technician, the results remainidentical.
 * **High-Speed Data Acquisition:** With a sampling frequency of up to 1000Hz ,
the C610Hcaptures the exact micro-second of fracture, providing a true representation
   of thematerial’s yield point.
 * ** Multi-Mode Functionality:** Beyond simple tensile tests, the C610H is a versatile
laboratoryworkhorse capable of performing peel tests (180° and 90°), tear resistance,
heat sealstrength, and even puncture resistance.
