FAQ's
What are heating and drying chambers used for in the automotive industry?
Automotive labs and production lines use heating and drying chambers to remove moisture from plastic and rubber parts, pre-condition components before testing, cure or dry adhesives and coatings, and run thermal ageing tests on materials. Forced convection moves hot air through the chamber so that every part, whatever its position on the shelf, sees the same conditions.
What are heating and drying chambers used for in the automotive industry?
Flexitest offers three BINDER forced-convection models: the FD 56 (60 L, compact, for small parts and routine drying), the M 115 (113 L, with a touchscreen controller and advanced programming for material and ageing tests) and the FED 720 (741 L, with two doors for large parts and big batches). All three reach 300°C.
What temperature range do these chambers cover?
All three models work from just above ambient temperature up to +300°C. The lower limit is +10°C above ambient for the FD 56, +12°C above ambient for the FED 720 and +23°C above ambient for the M 115. They are heating chambers, so they cannot cool below ambient. If your test needs sub-ambient temperatures or humidity control, a climate chamber is the right choice.
How accurate and uniform is the temperature inside the chamber?
At 150°C the M 115 has the tightest figures, with ±1 K uniformity and ±0.2 K fluctuation. The FD 56 achieves ±1.7 K and ±0.3 K, and the FED 720 achieves ±2.0 K and ±0.6 K, which is a very good result for a 741 L chamber. These values are measured on empty chambers to BINDER’s factory standard based on DIN 12880.
How quickly do the chambers heat up and recover after the door is opened?
To reach 150°C, the M 115 takes about 11 minutes, the FD 56 about 15 minutes and the FED 720 about 25 minutes. After the door has been open for 30 seconds at 150°C, the FD 56 recovers in about 4 minutes, and the M 115 and FED 720 in about 6 minutes. A reinforced fan with uprated heating output is available as an option for the FED 720 for faster heat-up and recovery.
How do I choose the right chamber size and load capacity?
Choose by part size and weight, leaving space around the parts for airflow. The FD 56 holds 70 kg total (30 kg per rack), the M 115 holds 150 kg (30 kg per rack) and the FED 720 holds 315 kg (45 kg per rack). The FED 720 takes up to 16 shelves, and heavy-load racks rated at 70 kg each are available. Reinforced inner chambers are an option on all three models: 85 kg for the FD 56, 170 kg for the M 115 and 350 kg for the FED 720.
What is the difference between the M 115 and the FED/FD models?
The M 115 is built for material and ageing tests, with a touchscreen controller, time-segment and real-time programming, a reinforced fan, a backup Pt 100 sensor, an Ethernet interface and an internal data logger. It also offers an optional specimen temperature control sensor. The FD 56 is a simple forced-convection chamber with an LCD controller, and the FED 720 adds adjustable fan speed and enhanced timer functions. Choose the M 115 when you need programmable profiles and documentation; choose FD or FED models for routine drying and heating.
What safety features do the chambers have?
All three have a Class 2 independent, adjustable temperature safety device (DIN 12880), which cuts off the heating if the main controller fails and protects parts and the chamber from overheating. The M 115 also offers a Class 3.1 device with a visual and acoustic alarm and a Pt 100 backup sensor with failsafe function. For the FD 56 and FED 720, a Class 3.1 device and a switchable acoustic overheating alarm are available as options.
Can these chambers be used for processes that need special conditions or documentation?
Yes. Options include access ports (10 to 100 mm), an inert gas connection, a gas-tight version, a silicone-free FKM door gasket, a HEPA H14 fresh-air filter, a lockable door handle and a 4-20 mA analog output. All models have USB data logging, and the FED 720 and M 115 also have Ethernet. APT-COM software can record data, and its GLP edition meets FDA 21 CFR Part 11 requirements. Calibration certificates with up to 27 measuring points and IQ/OQ/PQ documents are available for audited environments.
What power supply and installation space are needed, and what support does Flexitest provide?
The FD 56 (1.1 kW) and M 115 (2.4 kW) run on a single-phase 230 V supply. The FED 720 (4.5 kW) needs a three-phase 400 V supply, so check your power availability before ordering. Leave 160 mm clearance at the back and 100 mm at the sides of every model. Flexitest provides installation and operator training, service engineers, maintenance contracts and 24/7 service support.
