Frequently Asked Questions
Choosing the right instrument for paints, coatings, haze and laboratory colour measurement.
Which instrument is suitable for colour measurement of paints and coatings?
For opaque painted or coated parts, use the portable TS7700 for reflectance measurements or the benchtop YS6060 for laboratory reflectance and transmittance work. The YH1000 is intended for haze and total transmittance measurements on transparent or translucent samples.
What is the difference between the TS7700 and YS6060?
The TS7700 is a portable d/8 reflectance spectrophotometer with a 400–700 nm wavelength range. The YS6060 is a benchtop instrument that combines d/8 reflectance and d/0 transmittance measurements across 360–780 nm.
When should the YH1000 haze meter be used?
Use the YH1000 to evaluate haze and total transmittance of transparent or translucent glass, plastics, films, screens and similar materials. It is not the primary choice for routine colour measurement of opaque painted metal parts.
What do SCI and SCE mean in coating colour measurement?
SCI includes specular reflection and is useful for comparing the intrinsic colour of a coating. SCE excludes specular reflection and more closely reflects how surface gloss or texture affects visual appearance. The TS7700 and YS6060 support both modes.
Which measurement geometry does each instrument use?
The TS7700 uses d/8 reflectance geometry. The YS6060 supports d/8 reflectance and d/0 transmittance. The YH1000 uses 0/D transmittance geometry for haze and total transmittance testing.
Which observer angles and illuminants are available?
The TS7700 and YS6060 support 2° and 10° standard observers with multiple standard illuminants. The YH1000 uses a 2° observer and D65, A and C illuminants.
Which ASTM and ISO standards are used for colour measurement and QC of paint, powder coatings and coated metals?
Start with your finish. For ordinary solid-colour paint or coated metal, ISO 18314-1 covers practical colour measurement of uniform paint films; ASTM E1331 covers sphere-based reflectance measurement; and ASTM E1164, ASTM E308 and ASTM D2244 cover the path from spectral data to CIE values and agreed colour-difference tolerances. ASTM D1729 is used for controlled visual comparison. For powder coatings, ASTM D5382 is a useful QC guide covering colour, colour difference, gloss and metamerism. Metallic-flake coatings need multi-angle measurement under ASTM E2194, while pearlescent or interference-effect coatings may require ASTM E2539—a normal d/8 instrument is not a substitute. ISO/CIE 11664-4 defines CIELAB L*a*b*, and ISO/CIE 11664-6 defines CIEDE2000. Always follow the method edition, illuminant, observer, geometry and tolerance in the customer’s coating specification. Share your substrate and finish so Flexitest can confirm the right instrument and setup.
