Why Packaging Testing Matters
The QC Challenges Every Packaging Manufacturer Faces
In packaging, every undocumented quality failure reaches the consumer – as a product recall, a customer complaint, or a rejected shipment. Calibrated, traceable test data is your only defence.
Barrier Failures Shortening Product Shelf Life
A packaging film with OTR or WVTR above specification allows oxygen and moisture to reach the product — causing premature oxidation, rancidity, and spoilage before the printed shelf life. Without a barrier analyzer, You cannot control what you can't measure.
Seal Failures Reaching the Consumer
An under-sealed or over-sealed pouch leaks in transit or opens prematurely on the shelf. Without a heat seal tester and seal strength UTM, you are shipping product integrity risk to your customer every batch.
COF Issues Causing Packaging Line Jams
Film with incorrect coefficient of friction (too slippery or too sticky) jams FFS lines, causes misfeeds, and creates production downtime. The MXD-02 COF tester identifies the problem before it reaches the filling line — not after.
MAP Packaging Losing Modified Atmosphere
Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) that loses its O₂/CO₂ balance through micro-leaks or inadequate seals shortens product shelf life. Headspace gas analysis and vacuum leak testing catch these failures before the product reaches retail.
Inconsistent Film Properties Across Supplier Batches
Film tensile strength, elongation, and dart impact resistance that varies between supplier batches causes packaging line failures and inconsistent consumer experience. Incoming material QC with UTM and mechanical property testers catches batch variation before it enters production.
Out-of-Spec Resin Causing Film Extrusion Problems
A PE or PP resin batch with incorrect Melt Flow Index causes film thickness variation, gel formation, and extrusion instability. An MFI test on incoming resin takes 10 minutes and prevents a full shift of scrap film — and a delayed customer delivery.

FAQ's
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Common questions from QC managers, procurement officers, and R&D teams.
1 What packaging testing instruments does Flexitest supply?
Flexitest supplies 12 packaging testing categories: OTR/WVTR barrier analyzers; Universal Testing Machines (UTM) for tensile, peel, and seal strength; COF testers; heat seal and hot tack testers; package leak testers; MAP headspace gas analyzers; film/laminate mechanical property testers (dart impact, shrinkage, Gelbo flex, rub, thickness); container torque testers; UV/weathering chambers; drying and heating chambers; melt flow indexers (MFI); and moisture analyzers. All with free installation, calibration, and operator training across India. Flexitest can design a complete turnkey packaging QC lab.
What is the difference between OTR and WVTR testing?
OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate) per ASTM D3985 / ISO 15105 measures how much oxygen permeates through a packaging film – critical for snacks, coffee, meat, cheese, and pharma where oxygen causes oxidation, rancidity, and spoilage. WVTR (Water Vapor Transmission Rate) per ASTM F1249 / ISO 15106 measures moisture permeation — essential for dry foods, hygroscopic pharmaceuticals, and moisture-sensitive electronics where moisture ingress causes caking, degradation, or product failure. Flexitest supplies dedicated instruments for each, plus the Labthink C401H/C403H combination systems that measure both OTR and WVTR on a single sample mount.
What instruments do I need for a complete food packaging QC lab?
A complete food packaging QC lab typically includes: OTR/WVTR barrier analyzer (C401H/C403H) for shelf life validation; C660M seal strength and leak tester for seal integrity; MAP headspace gas analyzer (C650H) for MAP pack O₂/CO₂ verification; UTM or C610H for tensile, peel, and tear testing; MXD-02 COF tester for film machine runnability; C630H heat seal tester for sealing parameter qualification; Sartorius MA160 moisture analyzer for incoming resin dryness verification; and a Binder M115 drying chamber for sample conditioning per ASTM D618. Flexitest designs complete turnkey packaging labs – contact us for a full lab configuration proposal.
What is the difference between the C630H Heat Seal Tester and the C632M Hot Tack Tester?
The C630H Heat Seal Tester (ASTM F2029) creates seals under controlled temperature, pressure, and dwell time, then measures seal strength after the seal has cooled to room temperature – delivering static seal strength and the sealing window curve that maps ideal sealing conditions for a packaging material. The C632M Hot Tack Tester (ASTM F1921) measures the strength of the seal while it is still hot — immediately after the sealing jaws open. Hot tack is critical for FFS (Form-Fill-Seal) production lines where packages are handled, dropped onto conveyors, and filled immediately after sealing, before the seal has cooled. Both tests are needed for complete seal qualification of a flexible packaging material.
Why is Melt Flow Index (MFI) testing important in a packaging lab?
The Tinius Olsen MP1200 MFI measures how thermoplastic polymers flow under heat and pressure — qualifying incoming resin batches (PE, PP, PET, HDPE) before film extrusion, ensuring consistent film thickness, validating recycled/regrind blends, and preventing seal failures caused by incorrect polymer flow. A batch with incorrect MFI can cause film breaks, thickness variation, and poor seal quality.
Do all Flexitest instruments come with calibration certificates?
Yes. Every instrument supplied by Flexitest includes a factory calibration certificate traceable to international standards, plus method documentation for the applicable ASTM/ISO/BIS standard. AMC contracts include scheduled calibration visits. Standalone traceable calibration certificates are also available for audit purposes.
What is the delivery and installation lead time across India?
Stocked instruments: 2- 4 weeks. Imported/customised: 6-10 weeks. Flexitest handles logistics, on-site installation, calibration, operator training & commissioning – all included at zero extra cost. Service engineers in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Pune, Hyderabad & Chennai.
