programmable 880T salt spray chamber
Plastics don’t rust, but they still fail in salty, humid environments. Metallised and chrome-plated plastic trims blister, painted polymer housings lose adhesion, metal inserts corrode inside moulded parts, and some compounds swell, discolour or crack under damp heat and salt mist. The Flexitest programmable salt spray chamber (models 880/T, 881/T and 882/T) lets polymer processors and moulders measure these effects under controlled, repeatable conditions.
The chamber follows ISO 4611, the standard for determining the effects of damp heat, water spray and salt mist on plastics, and ASTM D1735 water fog testing for coatings on plastic substrates. It also runs ASTM B117, ISO 9227 and CASS tests for plated-on-plastic parts used in automotive interiors, sanitaryware, electrical enclosures and consumer appliances.

Features
- Built for plastics standards: ISO 4611 (damp heat, water spray and salt mist on plastics) and ASTM D1735 (water fog), plus ASTM B117, ISO 9227, ASTM B368 (CASS for plated plastics), ASTM G85 and DIN 50021.
- Gentle, controlled heating: Heating wires on the outer layer of the inner plate warm the chamber by radiation, with PID control. Working room RT+5 °C to 55 °C with ≤ ±2 °C uniformity, so temperature-sensitive polymers see a steady environment.
- Salt fog or plain water fog: The peristaltic pump supply works with salt solution or water, so one chamber runs both salt mist and water fog tests.
- Flexible sample rack for moulded parts: Rods, V-shaped glass-fibre brackets (20° ± 5°) and a mesh plate hold flat plaques, housings, trims and odd-shaped mouldings. Rack capacity is above 200 kg.
- Long-duration ageing tests: Continuous fog up to 999.9 hours, or intervals of up to 99 h 59 min spray and 99 h 59 min pause, set on the TEMI 880 7-inch touch screen.
- Clean results, no drip marks: The inclined lid keeps condensate off sample surfaces, which matters for gloss, colour and appearance ratings on plastics.
- Data you can report: Up to 360 days of logged temperature and test data, USB program and data transfer, and RS232 connection for up to 16 chambers.

FAQs
Why do plastic parts need salt spray testing?
Most plastic products contain or carry something that can corrode or degrade: plated or painted surfaces, metal inserts, or additives sensitive to moisture. Salt spray testing reveals blistering, adhesion loss, discolouration and insert corrosion before parts are released.
What is ISO 4611?
ISO 4611 describes how to expose plastics to damp heat, water spray and salt mist, and how to assess changes afterwards in properties such as appearance, mass, dimensions and mechanical strength.
Can I test chrome-plated plastic parts?
Yes. Plated-on-plastic parts are usually tested with CASS to ASTM B368 or with neutral salt spray to ASTM B117 or ISO 9227. The chamber supports all three.
Can the chamber run a water fog test instead of salt spray?
Yes. Fill the external tank with water instead of salt solution to run ASTM D1735 water fog tests for coatings on plastic and other substrates.
How do I choose the right chamber size for polymer samples?
